Wife Beater Sentenced After Local Court Trial
A 32 year old man, James Fred Cape, pleaded no defense to assault with intent to kill with a deadly weapon. He received a three to five year term in central prison after a year of observation and trial in Gaston superior court. Cape, who beat his wife Dorothy with a hammer on August 9, claimed brain damage from a prior accident. State doctors found no mental disorder or brain damage. Judge Francis Clarkson noted Cape’s time in state institutions and ordered an electroencephalogram during imprisonment. Mrs Cape recovered after 16 days in hospital.
