U S Marines smashed a Communist regiment about 25 miles southwest of Da Nang killing around 670 enemy troops. Leatherneck casualties were 73 dead and 139 wounded. The fight ended after two days of heavy combat near Da Nang base with the enemy stream slipping away northward.
Washington AP report shows 170000 American youths rejected for the draft last year due to mental limits. Another 23555 failed on mental and medical grounds at preinduction exams in 1966. The Army surgeon general cites Vietnam manpower demand and lowered mental standards as key factors in the acceptability changes.
