Female population swells at Gaston County Jail
Sheriff Alan Cloninger notes the female inmate count at Gaston County Jail now regularly runs 125 to 150, up from past lows, with 293 women booked in May among 991 total bookings. He links the rise to substance abuse as 85 percent of inmates had drug or alcohol issues last year, prompting transfers to Charlotte due to space limits.

Grace Daniel, 77, longtime Budget Inn resident in Gastonia, moved Tuesday to Brookdale Union assisted living on Union Road. Once a motel worker, she endured arthritis scoliosis and a rodent-filled room as Gastonia police logged frequent crime there. Her friend says she now enjoys meeting new people and plans to adapt well.
