HB2 Backlash As AG Opposes LGBT Law Remains Split
North Carolina officials clash over HB2 as Attorney General Roy Cooper opposes the law while his office seeks an extension for the state to respond to a federal lawsuit. Gov. Pat McCrory’s legal team says Cooper’s stance risks the state’s defense, with the filing naming McCrory, DPS, and UNC system among defendants. The UNC system says it will not enforce HB2 and seeks funding for its legal fees. The law, enacted in March, requires transgender people to use bathrooms matching birth certificates in many public spaces.
