Firefighters train for wildfires amid weather limits in Stanley
About 40 officials from the N C Forest Service and Mount Holly and East Lincoln fire departments gathered in Stanleys Educational State Forest for a three day wildfire training. A rain soaked landscape and lack of wind halted a planned prescribed burn, leaving planes and helicopters to simulate response while bulldozers cleared lines and crews extinguished controlled blazes. Ranger Ferrell Banks called the session efficient but not optimal, noting real fires would heighten training intensity.

Double Homicide Suspect Turned 18 on Birthday
A Gaston County teen, Jose Adan Lopez-Rios, who turned 18 on Thursday, is held without bond for a double killing that happened May 26. Investigators say he shot 33-year-old Derreck Brice and 26-year-old Lashea Coleman, who had cerebral palsy, both cousins and acquaintances at a church event earlier that week. Police still seek motive while noting the killings were not random. Lopez-Rios asked for English interpretation as his hearing noted language barriers.
