The Herald notes Gallup State Bank surpassed one million dollars in deposits last week and continues to rise. In four years the bank has shown rapid growth, earning praise as the youngest and strongest bank in western New Mexico and eastern Arizona.
J R Willis reports adding a late model Pako Printer to his Gallup studio. The treadle operated machine prints and numbers automatically with an electric light flash for each print. Willis notes the Herald ordered the latest lino type model for Kodak printing and finishing, aiming to boost Gallup’s growth.
The Methodist Sunday School presents Promotion Day next Sunday September 28. The program shows formal annual promotions from grade to grade and department to department as the school becomes more organized and graded. The public is invited to attend and observe the new curriculum and exercises.
A crossing at Coal Ave and First Street is repaired with substantial cement culverts. Residents welcome these durable structures and hope more culverts like this are installed.
Messrs. Arcey and Martinez have opened a barber shop adjacent to the Banner drug store, expanding local services in the area.
Merrs N A Ross and John Balok Jr from Mc Gaffey came down Tuesday. Ross and wife and daughter Leota plan to attend the State University at Albuquerque with the mother remaining a few days. Balok was on a business call for The Herald. They are farmers in the Zuni mountains and report crops harvested and abundant yields. They note the first killing frost of the season fell Tuesday morning in the mountains.
The narrator recalls a trek from Guerchy to Noisy le Sec seeking rations for French civilians and American troops. They secured sugar beans flour and lard from a warehouse via a French artillery colonel and transported them to Paris, then returned to Guerchy to distribute. The locals commemorated the aid with a bronze tablet near the Joan of Arc statue.
War Camp Community Service merges with the National Committee on Memorial Buildings to promote living memorial community houses. The new group, Community Service Incorporated, aims to develop better moral and welfare conditions and leisure activities across American communities. Local organizers will be sent for up to three months to help map programs and budgets, with local fundraising to support the initiative.

The Navajo Curio Co. owned by Paul Kley and J. D. Kilborn opens near Railroad Ave and First St. The building will display curio goods with an Indian silversmith employed. They will continue Delco electric light agency and offer demonstration rooms. They have sold their battery business to Lamb Motor Co.
L. D. Straw installs the Miller Ad On A Tire System at the Old Trail garage stand in Carbon City Vulcanizing Works. The new business promises to be among the best tire repair methods and will bring substantial auto work to Gallup, boosting local garage activity.
J A Watson has purchased the Cadillac Service Garage and starts Paige Service Garage Paige Paige parts will be stocked and a general garage business will be conducted Watson specializes in Paige cars and will serve Paige owners in the Gallup area The Independent reports Mr Hannett and the School Board killed the bonds in this week’s issue.
Business notices announce the establishment of the Carbon City Vulcanizing Works by L. D. Straw at the Old Trail Garage stands.
The Congregational Church schedules morning worship at 11 o clock with The Triumph of the Ideal and an evening service at 8 o clock featuring The Unpardonable Sin. All are cordially invited to attend.
A Thursday night program at the Methodist church presented an elaborate music and living pictures set. A selected group of the city's best talent performed the numbers, and the audience felt they got their money's worth and more.
Lawrence sells F S Lawrences store in Gallup to J M Carman and B W Tamony marking a new ownership. He came to Gallup eight years ago and helped grow the general store into a prominent southwest business while serving as a local public leader and state senator.
Miss Eleanor Quick received a medal from the treasury department for patriotic service in schools. Senior Ida Sanita, ill, paused her four year course in three years, with teachers and peers lamenting her absence. Students work on a Who’s Who in Gallup project while sophomores, juniors assist with duties. Cooking and sewing classes begin new projects and mothers are invited to visit. Three graduates prepare for college while two attend state university and another two are at Roswell Military School with best wishes from the school.
McKinley County deputies R N Johnston and Chas Gallatin of San Francisco orchestrated a San Francisco arrest of John D Parker and wife May Parker for assault and robbery of John Stalick on Aug 16 in Gallup. They were bound over to the grand jury with bonds set at 3500 each. Alice Schraltz testified as a principal witness.
Chapter C5 PEO hosted a Gallup public schools reception at City Club last Saturday afternoon. Mrs. C. B. Chambers spoke on PEO aims and educational work. A program of solos dances readings and a social hour followed with tea and sandwiches provided by the PEOs. The event aimed to improve teachers’ stay and encourage community support for local education.
