The First Inter State Fair for McKinley County and Gallup has been staged. It discusses improving planning for the 1920 fair, urging a early start, proper secretary, and timely publicity. Thanks are given to J. R. Willis and Homer Powers.
In Birmingham Alabama the Southern Baptists authorized a 100000 appropriation to establish a standard college in New Mexico. They require New Mexico to raise a convention in Santa Fe October 22 24. A permanent college location will be decided based on railway access climate and Baptist support.
Mrs Mabel Porter and Miss Alma Gostin describe a pleasure auto journey to Albuquerque last week. They report a wonderful time despite flood damaged roads and note they did not require hospital repairs. The pair call the trip “a bumping good time.”
Mr and Mrs J E Wetenhall attend the San Juan fair at Shiprock this week.
Mrs. J. J. Barrett and family plan to move to Denver for work with the Santa Fe. Her son Edward, long an invalid from a spinal and limb tuberculosis, has learned to walk with crutches and braces after months of treatment by Dr. Ada M. Chevailler. Mrs. Barrett praises the doctor for the cure and asks the Herald to share the news with the public.
F M Parker and family were in Gallup for Mrs Barbara Goodman visiting Prescott. A H Womack of Polacco Arizona visited Ganado en route home. Miss Nicholson Printup and Keenig joined Kirkwood Memorial School as teachers. B E Roberts traveled to Gallup on business. Mr and Mrs Harwood artists from Tong Ni and party visited Ganado Keams Canon and the Hopi mesas. Dr Barry Burke and wife Dr Alice Burke arrived to begin medical work. W J Norton of Chicago visited the Hubbell family. J L Hubbell reports finishing his third alfalfa crop a strong northern Arizona yield. Rev H D Smith returns from Birmingham Alabama to his mother’s home.
E A Roberts from Ganado visited Wednesday with Gibson Fawn Lumber Co to buy supplies for a new series of school buildings to serve 200 children. The current school houses 50 students and the completed project will add 200 more capacity. Roberts is the purchasing agent for the community school buildings.
U.S. District Court in New Mexico announces summons for fall juries. Grand jurors report in Santa Fe on October 6 and a long list of names includes Lindley Clovis Baca Socorro Runyan Artesia Valdez Springer and many others. Petit jurors must appear in Albuquerque on October 13 with a separate roster of summonses.
Alfred I. Ruiz Sr. will enter a mercantile business with David Garcia at Atarque New Mexico carrying a large stock to serve the region’s trade. Garcia is a wealthy local sheep man and influential citizen. Ruiz, a capable businessman, formerly with P. Miecker Co. of Gallup nine years, is son of Judge Alfred Ruiz Sr. of our city.
The banks of Gallup State Bank McKinley County Bank and Merchants Bank will close at 12 noon on October 6 7 and 8 due to the fair Patrons should complete banking before noon on those days during fair week.
Mrs Martha Lindsey welcomes a baby girl born September 14 at St Marys Hospital weighing eight pounds.
Arcey and Martinez prepare to open a barber shop next door to Banner Drug Store. Both previously held chairs at the Sanitary shop and are ready to serve customers. G Hagan, formerly with Lawrence grocery, joins the P Migger Co.
Governor Larrazolo issues proclamation marking Friday October 24 1919 as Americanization Day in public schools and state colleges. Roosevelt Memorial themes to guide patriotic programs promoting Americanism among youth across New Mexico.
The New Mexico state public lands commissioner will offer eighty acres of school land in McKinley County at a December 16 1919 sale. Part lies within Gallup townsite with an appraised value of 500 per acre, no bid below that. Land granted June 1898 faced coal rights litigation, but squatter improvements on the land will not be claimed by the state. Cash terms at sale.
The $200000 road bond issue for Chaves County carried decisively in a special election on September 23. Funds will improve county highways not in the state or federal system, including the north and south valley roads, and connect with Eddy County to Pecos and Ft. Stockton, linking toward San Antonio and the Gulf coast.
Dr J L Kennedy of Ganado visited Gallup on Wednesday for unknown reasons while traveling through the area. He was seen brief in downtown events and left town the same day.
Major McLaughlin and Capt. Frobridge of Washington were guests of Mr. and Mrs. J Wetenhall on Tuesday evening. Dr James Kennedy of Ganado passed through Gallup Wednesday en route to Ship Rock to attend the San Juan Basin Fair.
Mr. Casteel from Sawyer visits the Herald with samples of the Fults wheat and Bald barley. He notes yields of 40 bushels plus for wheat and about 75 for barley, alongside strong crops of oats, potatoes, and onions. Buck Moore aids in farming on rich western land, with Russian White oats yielding high per acre. Sawyer lies about 14 miles east of McGaffey in an 8000 feet altitude farming belt.
Dr. David S. Hill, since August 1, leads a broad reorganization at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
