Scholastic Books Writing Contest Details and Dates

Scholastic Books sponsors a nationwide writing contest in two divisions junior for grades 6 through 9 and senior for grades 10 through 13. Classifications include essays poetry short stories journalism one act plays reviews of books plays radio music and humor. Winners receive awards and scholarships. notices arrive in May. Closing date is March 5 1947 with information in Room 303.

Band Prepares For Tenth Annual February Convocation

The band completes music for the tenth annual February event. Officers have formed committees for advertising ticket sales stage decor bulletin boards and programs. They prepare a variety of numbers for a special student convocation.

Nuckolls and Sleigh Named Junior Kiwanians

Bill Nuckolls and Donn Sleigh of Fairbury High School were selected as Junior Kiwanians. They attend Kiwanis meetings at the Mary Etta Hotel each Monday noon in January. Sleigh is sponsored by Arthur Denney and Chatelain sponsors Nuckolls.

Freshmen Produce Radio Skit On Birchwood Lane

On January 16 the freshman class produced a radio program on Birchwood Lane. LaVern Jensen and Jones led the class which wrote the script arranged sound effects and the introduction music. They solved a problem by using straws and blowing into a water can.

Attendance High As FHS Reports Seventy-Nine Star Students

Seventy nine FHS students maintained perfect attendance with no absences or tardies in the first semester. Freshmen include George Karabatsos Geraldine Sisler Richard Schoen rock Stanley Oberhelman and others. Sophomores Juniors and Seniors listed show a wide turnout with many named pupils and family names included.

Five Fairbury High Students Transfer At Semester Break

Five students left Fairbury High School at the start of the second semester. Otto Rath moved to Peru Nebraska to continue schooling. Ed Jungck relocated to Englewood Colorado to work and study part time. Loretta Zimmerman, from Chicago, is finishing her second semester in Jansen. Beverly Riddle moved to Steele City to attend school. Harold Knobel completed high school and enrolled in Fairbury Junior College.

FFA Gains Several New Members For Semester

The Future Homemakers of America held their first meeting of the second semester on January 23. Several new members pledged to join FHA and a prior month brought two letters from England to Beulah Lurz and Marjorie Bret about Christmas boxes. A program chairmen meeting occurred during the week.

Onnen Elected Booster Club President at BC

Onnen, a senior, is chosen president for the second semester in an election held January 22. Other officers elected are Jack Hammond, senior, vice president. Lora Katz, senior, secretary. and Dick Anderson, sophomore, treasurer.

Pep Club Skit Energizes Falls City Basketball Rally

The Pep Club performed a skit at the Falls City rally for the basketball game. The skit depicted mourning over a 59 to 0 loss to Fairbury. Plans to attend out of town games and home games are being made and membership is open for the second semester.

English Classes Adopt New Literature Texts

Miss Akin's English classes use a new text titled Achievements in the fifth period. The seventh period class uses Literature and Life. Later the classes will exchange books to broaden their literary choices.

Richard Johnson Improving After Ruptured Appendix

Richard Johnson is improving following a ruptured appendix. Doctors report he responded to treatment and is resting comfortably as care continues.

Seniors Lead Honor Roll With Forty Earn Top Marks

Fairbury High School, Nebraska reports thirty eight students on the third six weeks honor roll. Seniors lead with fourteen names, including Nucholls Richardson Neville Speir Malone and others with averages ranging from 1.28 to 1.6 across four or five subjects. Juniors Sophomores and Freshmen also record strong averages as teachers acknowledge gifts to Nebraska Orthopedic Hospital during Christmas.

Richardson To Compete In DAR Essay Contest

The Good Citizenship contest at Fairbury High School on February 1 names Peggy Neville Helen Richardson and Meredyth Speir as senior class candidates with Helen Richardson chosen as representative. The Pilgrim winner earns a four day Washington DC pilgrimage as a guest of the National Society.

Student Club and Tri-Y Host Supper Party at YWCA

A potluck supper and party for about 20 girls was held January 18 by the Student Club and Tri-Y at the YWCA. Motion pictures opened the event and a planned handicraft meeting was announced. Some handiwork was displayed and next month the group plans to start a Valentine Red Cross project.
