The government thermometer reading 111 degrees tops a heat wave in Fairbury with local thermometers reaching 118 degrees before bursting. The heat, aggravated by a power outage and hot winds, drove residents to cellars as they endured a day described as the worst in the region. The Nebraska storm that night finally cooled the air.

Despicable Act Tied Calf to Lumber Wagon on Square

A man tied a team to a hitchrack on the town square with a large box containing a young calf in a lumber wagon. The animal left exposed to heat from 8 am to 7 pm when the marshal took charge and placed it at a livery stable for feeding and watering. The act drew street crowds and prompted an editorial condemning the perpetrator.

Man Struck by Train While Hitching Home to Wisconsin

A stranger traveling from California to Wauwatosa Wisconsin was struck by a moving train in the Rock Island yards around 9 PM Tuesday. He injured seriously while riding a string of box cars during yard switching and jumped off at the end.

Storm Wreaks Havoc in Fairbury Area

Sunday night's wind storm ranks as one of the worst in years. Globe Pharmacy window glass shattered, trees felled, and minor damage reported around town. A near cyclone struck Rose Creek and damage spread to Niels Jacobson's farm six miles south with a demolished milk house wind mill unroofed barn and a destroyed buggy.

Storm Losses Include Trees and Wheat Across Rose Creek

The report notes apple trees torn from roots and about ten acres of wheat in the shock blown away, with debris scattered among timber on Rose Creek. Mr. Bloyd narrowly escaped injury during the storm while tending a windmill.

Auto firm completes buyout of Fairbury unit

The Holtz Lewis Auto Co bought the business and repair division of the Fairbury Auto Co and took possession last Friday. Mr. Jones says he does not expect to return to the auto business, but has not yet decided his next steps. Bring it to us and we will print it.
