Ocean to Ocean Hiker Walsh Reaches Fairbury on 3000 Mile Trek

John Walsh, former U S Army sergeant, arrived in Fairbury on Tuesday morning at 8 after setting out October 24 from San Francisco to walk to Boston in about three months for William Randolph Hearst, earning $2000. He has crossed Colorado and Nebraska planting a Lincoln State Journal provided flag and traveled 35 miles in 16 hours from Lebanon, Kansas, without food or sleep. Walsh recalls past dangers including flagging a potential train wreck in Utah and surviving a desert crossing, averaging 50 to 60 miles daily and facing near starvation. He expects easier terrain ahead and notes congressional records secured for Fairbury library.

Demise of J C Kesterson Calls Civic Leader to Rest

Obituary details the life of John C Kesterson born 1847 in Missouri, who moved westward and became a prominent Fairbury merchant, livestock trader, postmaster, city official, park advocate, and benefactor. Funeral held December 26. survived by a son Lon C and five sisters and three brothers.

Christmas Services and Pageant Across Local Churches

Sunday schools in the TM City held Christmas events with a Methodist cantata Entertaining Santa Claus directed by Mrs. Hunt drawing a large crowd. The Episcopal party at Odd Fellows hall featured about 100 gifts and a children’s program with a tree of presents. Inclement weather limited parts of the Presbyterian program led by the primary department with songs and prayers.
