Double Murder at Champlin Farm Two Miles West of Fairbury
George Baker and his wife were shot in their home early Tuesday by a lone assailant who fired through the east window as they dressed. The killer fled but minutes later was surrounded in a barn and killed himself with the same gun. Lawmen organized a bloodhound-led search and identified Bill Baker, George’s brother, as the suspect. a posse recovered the body at the scene and the coroner determined no inquest was needed. The tragedy left four children orphaned and stunned the local community.

It is ordered that terms of court shall be held in the ret judicial district of Nebraska during 1898 in Gage Jefferson Nemaha Rennesy Richardson counties with specified dates. A panel of twenty four jurors is to be drawn for each term except where a term is without a jury. Jury summons to begin the second day of each term except May and June in all counties save Gage and Richardson.
