Horace Greeley arrived in a city at eleven yesterday morning, with 1,500 citizens gathering at the depot after his route change was decided that morning. A cannon fired as he stepped from the train, he spoke about twenty minutes to hearty applause, then departed to Corry, en route to Titusville and Warren.
The first national convention of colored men assembled in Louisville with William H. Chambers introducing Col. Br. N. Jones who framed welcome remarks. Horace Greeley letter read urging equal regard for all citizens and urging progress not division ahead. William N. Fire at the Lunatic Asylum of Northern Ohio in Newburg near Cleveland destroys the building housing about 600 inmates. Many escaped. fatalities reported including a woman named Miss Walker. Rescue efforts continue as churches and local institutions house survivors. Estimated loss around 350000 with no insurance forthcoming.

News from Pleasant Plains Sangamon county reports the death of Rev Peter Cartwright at his home at 3 30 yesterday afternoon He was born September 1 1785 in Amherst Virginia and died aged 87 years 24 days at his Illinois home He had been ill for several months and relatives were summoned to his bedside.
Judge Dibble ordered the imprisonment of Auditor James Graham after ruling the pardon by Governor Warmouth unconstitutional and void in the State of Louisiana ex rel Board of State Assessors v. Graham. In Mississippi, engineer John P. Hughes won $17,500 in damages against the N O J G N railroad for injuries suffered in 1869.
