The report recounts Spotted Tail and his delegation meeting the President with Gen. Walker and other officials to discuss moving their agency. The President suggests a $60,000 saving in transport but defers final choice to the Indians after consultations. Also noted are government appointments, resignations, and diplomatic exchanges across departments.
Reports from New York and North Carolina indicate the Greeley and Grant campaigns plan to plant three thousand South Carolina negroes in North Carolina before the election to vote for the Administration party. The Erie Directors name General Divan as general manager, while Drew faces a stock-suit threat as the new board acts. Juarez’s death is confirmed, with Lerdo De Tejada poised to become interim president.
A large political demonstration in Richmond drew long crowds from nearby cities. Speeches by Senator Wilson and Frederick Douglass urged unity for Grant and Wilson, with Douglass appealing to Black voters and former Democrats and Whigs to join the Republican fold. A major blaze swept the Erie Railroad machine shops at Long Dock Jersey City last night, destroying the two story main building and a one story complex. Twenty seven locomotives were lost with the total value estimated over two and a half million dollars. The fire left about six hundred workers unemployed and illuminated the sky for miles as ruins smoldered at daylight.
Clearing weather expected on the lower lakes then Virginia and the Northeast with northerly to westerly winds veering southerly by Thursday. Temperatures rise briefly with southerly winds in the South Atlantic and Gulf States. Low Northwest barometer moves eastward with southerly to easterly winds and rain threats on the upper lakes by Thursday.
In Paris on a July morning three Communists who killed hostages at Rue Saxo were executed at Camp Satory. Oler shouted Vive la Commune while Francois cried Vive la France down with the Commune. The third died in silence. Also reported, in Concord Massachusetts a fire destroyed Ralph Waldo Emerson's house, saving some furniture and library. loss about $5,000, insured for $3,000.
Coroner's inquest at Red's Hill Hospital finds a child of Burdella Nunn died of smallpox on February 15. Ambulance needs and frozen ground led to temporary burial in an ash heap. Jury orders immediate exhumation and proper interment in the city cemetery for the deceased and other bodies buried on hospital grounds.
E H Loumel and H E Wilson argued heatedly at the Clinton House yesterday, drew pistols but did not fire, then reconciled and went to the bar. The piece also notes poor maintenance of gasoline street lamps in the southwest city and alleges contract light neglect. A man found dead in the Ohio river near Ludlow ferry is identified as accidental drowning with no clues to his name.

London reports the Geneva arbitration will run four months with the court ready to issue a final award after full consideration. Dispatches from Livingstone carried by Stanley via Zanzibar arrive in the city. A Mann erchor Sommernachtfest drew a large crowd at Inwood Park. Mayor Davis orders a three day stop to dog impounding for repairs.
In Judge CarrEn’s court Maggie Speed sixteen was discharged for want of proof. Wm Thompson, an old soldier, received a free ticket to the Soldiers' Home after papers were examined. Deliah Rodgers and Margaret Terrie were fined three dollars for foul language. Mary Rooney was jailed thirty days for drunkenness. Victoria Kelley was sent to the Workhouse for thirty days and fined five dollars. Raceland from Kentucky given fourteen days to settle accounts and sober up. Henry Becks and Frank Weaver arraigned for assault at Fishebrunner’s saloon. both fined five dollars each. Runk named as the principal complainant.
The French band was honored by a Irish deputation led by J B Mannix with a thanks for France in the city. Paulus spoke in French expressing gratitude as the audience applauded the overture Zampa and soloists Sylvester and Elie. The concert drew full main floor seating and standing room, with the band departing by midnight for Pittsburgh then France.
