In Frankfort Kentucky January 27 a stormy Senate session over the Southern Railroad Bill erupted when a Louisville and a Grant County senator drew pistols and had to be separated by the Sergeant at Arms. By early afternoon the vote stood eight to seven with Carlisle casting the deciding ballot to pass the bill.
In Lexington Kentucky Jacob Ott was shot and killed by James Crystal in Henry Stahel’s Limestone Street saloon. Crystal seized a navy revolver and killed Ott during a scuffle after a drinking quarrel. Crystal and Stahel are jailed awaiting trial.
Early this morning a blaze started at Ewing & Co. on Market Street causing extensive damage to Noel & Plater A. M. Perine & Co. J. Lumsden & Co. and Whitman Bros. The estimated total loss stands near 200000 dollars as Whiteman Bros. building suffered partial damage.
The Ways and Means and Appropriation committees report on duties for hides and rice and pass the Indian Appropriation Bill. Nominations to Texas and Florida posts are sent to the Senate while various naval and civil service transfers are ordered. The House debates printing budgets, claims, and civil service reform, with adjournment actions discussed.
The Senate debated the Apportionment Bill with Trumbull opposing adjournment until a vote on the House repeal bill for coal duties. In Lebanon on January 27 a bakery attached to Mrs Buck's confectionery burned, causing about 1000 dollars in damages. Minutes later a large stove foundry operated by Rosenburger Light Co and Reisenaker Meiley’s planing mill suffered a separate fire with an estimated loss of 35000 dollars, insured for 5000.
