New Orleans asks for martial law in its parish to quell unrest, but the President declines. The session covers pension and patent bills, Ways and Means hearings, tobacco tax data for Virginia, Naval orders, customs receipts, and talk of repealing the income tax.

In Versailles Kentucky the jail was found broken open and four inmates escaped including a white man and three negroes. One of the escaped negroes, Anderson Branch, was jailed for murder. Robt Garrett died after a fall causing a lung hemorrhage, he had been in committee for some time.
Madison January 13. In the House a Joint Committee of Nine was appointed on Congressional apportionment and legislation made necessary by the passage of the Constitutional amendment. liquor sellers has a memorial to Congress the renewal of the St. Croix land grant and a change of route to the Chippewa Valleys. Both Houses adjourned till Monday evening.
January 12 Philadelphia reports a large attendance at the National Association of Bar Iron Manufacturers meeting at the Continental Hotel. Resolutions urge tariff protection to sustain labor and capital, warn against tariff cuts, and protest dependence on foreign sources. Probate Court: John Martin Klein will admitted to probate.
January 12 Omaha reports Grand Duke Alexis and suite arriving from St. Louis at 1025 A M. They are welcomed by General Shdan and staff then tour main streets. A royal dinner and public reception follow at Gov Saunders residence before the train departs for Fort McPherson. Buffalo Bill to guide a Willow Creek hunt with cavalry escort.
A Pennsylvania Railroad freight locomotive exploded one mile east of Middletown. Engineer Chalkeky Doudall died within an hour. Fireman Jones Wilson suffered a broken leg and severe burns. Conductor Lewis sustained severe head injuries. The engine was a total wreck, with a recently new boiler.
Quincy Illinois January 13 Captain Caleb Bloom city treasurer and bank bookkeeper has been missing since Wednesday morning. His accounts are reported correct but he has speculated in grain and friends fear insolvency may have driven him to disappear.
Judge Burnet found both conveyances from Conrad Ahr to Peter Jenner and Jenner to Elizabeth Ahr were made for valuable consideration and in good faith, denying fraud claims. Other cases span civil judgments and criminal verdicts, including a grand larceny conviction for Nathaniel Mason and a habeas corpus petition for D G Miner, with Superior Court affirmations of judgments in bank and stock yard disputes.
In federal courts Miller v Clarke et al saw the defendants demurrer sustained with plaintiff allowed to amend. The United States v Furnace et al had further hearing postponed to Monday. Georgetown attorney G W King admitted to practice. Police Court heard Raymond Hall on receiving stolen goods with $30 counterfeit money found. case continued. bail set at $1,000.
