Havana February 27 The Russian fleet carrying Grand Duke Alexis and his suite arrived at noon from Pensacola. Salutes were fired from several men of war in the harbor. Debarkation time for the Ducal party has not yet been fixed.
In Harlem bridge fog a young woman, daughter of Rev Dr Rogers, fell or was blown from a moving train carrying Legrand Lockwood’s remains, likely fatally injuring her. O Briens hair store burned, Jersey City worker crushed by machinery, and legal notes from Washington outline state claims and treaty issues. Mayor Hall trial juror selection advances slowly in New York as Judge Barnard fines Granville Stillman.
Washington reports the House Expenditures of War Committee will convene Thursday morning to begin the French arms investigation. The War Department prepares a full official history and will respond fully to the enquiry. Col. Lewis Merrell, former U S Army commander in South Carolina who helped break up the Ku Klux Klan, has left for South Carolina with expanded commands and broader operations.
In Schuylkill Haven on February 27 two men named Scammill and Brown were arrested for the murder of el Dreamer and for attempting to assault his wife on the previous Sunday evening. One suspect has made a partial confession. They are in the county prison awaiting developments.
Mississippi Attorney General links drinking houses and weapons to crime. The Mobile Register reports a deadly Warsaw clash killing Captain J. J. Little and Z. T. Reardon. Suspect Tartt and W. T. Little fled. Little arrested in Gainesville. Reardon hailed for bravery. Russian fleet sails from Pensacola toward Havana then Rio Janeiro with nine more ships joining.
The trial of Joaquin Geist, a German accused of murdering his wife by pouring hot coffee down her throat, ended at noon with a guilty verdict after a 12.5 hour jury deliberation. He was sentenced to sixteen years in the penitentiary. The Royal Japanese Embassy party rested after travel and toured water works and schools during their city visit before departing for New York.
In Council Bluffs Iowa the Missouri River rose six inches in 24 hours and carries ice chunks. The bridge remains a temporary connection as the ice weakens and is expected to move soon. A Missouri Pacific train delay of ten hours is noted, and the Pacific House hotel, destroyed by fire, is being rebuilt to reopen by April 10.
Morristown February 28 Prosecuting Attorney Mills reports a frightful tragedy in Hurdtown Morris County. After a ball three men John Foley and two Wilkins brothers fought Foley was killed and one Wilkins brother fatally injured. Foley stabbed a brother and was then fatally stabbed by the remaining Wilkins. The murderer escaped and remains at large as searches continue.
Philadelphia February 27 The Legislative Investigation Committee halted the Evans examination after reports he was ill. This morning it was learned Evans fled to New York where he is concealed. His bondsman Dr Pain has been notified and a requisition will be sought from Governor Hoffman for his return. The committee will meanwhile proceed with questioning ex-State Treasurer Kimbal for further developments.
In Washington on February 21 at 7 P M probabilities indicate the barometer will fall through the Atlantic States by Wednesday morning. New England remains clear while the south of Pennsylvania grows cloudy with a falling barometer. Cloudy threatening weather extends eastward over the Gulf States with southerly coastal winds. dangerous winds are not anticipated for the Atlantic and Gulf coasts Tuesday evening.
The Cincinnati and Terre Haute Railway Company certificates of incorporation were filed with the Secretary of State on February 27. The line will run from Cincinnati, Hamilton county, to a point on the western border of Ohio near Hamilton county, crossing Indiana’s Terre Haute line. Capital stock set at one share of ten dollars each.

About four weeks ago twenty four books escaped from the Public Library of Cincinnati. Detective Orr collected twenty of the list from Stephen Morgan who helped the escape. Last night two of the remaining four, Eadie on Divine Love and Brown on the Gospel, appeared at the library door wrapped as if sent by a friend.
