Telegraph items outline the Stokes case fever and a wave of political notes. President sends letter to Forney. U S Attorney Southworth and ex Senator Warner appear in ongoing discussions. Also covered are railroad accidents and navigation improvements along with an insurance swindler arrest and a bank officer’s arrest. Aldermen seek venue change as redistricting bills move under Schiff.
Special Dispatch reports in Columbus on February 13 that the Schiff bill passed the House with Corcoran's amendment authorizing five commissioners to redraw the city wards by February 25. Debate was intense. Senate passage expected soon and supporters claim the Schiftites are pleased.
The Ways and Means panel set tobacco taxes at 16 cents per pound for plug and 35 cents for smoking tobacco and moved to reconsider tea and coffee being on the free list. The House Judiciary Committee reviews life insurance liability bills including death by own action benefiting heirs of personal crisis reports. Navy yard at Pensacola notes arrival of Russian fleet vessels Svetlana Bogatin Abreck.
In New York on February 13 1872 excitement over the Stokes case remained high as the trial continued and a jury panel was formed. Walter Roche former vice president of the Bowling Green Savings Bank was arrested on charges of fraudulent management with bail set at 50000. A letter from the President accepting Colonel Forney’s resignation as Philadelphia Collector is printed from the Executive Mansion dated February 12 1872 noting appreciation of his service.
Van Nort appoints Jno A Kennedy former police chief as Tax Collector. Peter B Sweeney has again left the city to dodge reporters. Bar Association met and prepared a memorial to the Legislature seeking impeachment of Judges Cardozo and Barnard and proposing Code amendments and fee reductions in public departments.
In Chicago Criminal Court Alderman Whitaker seeks a venue change, backed by 46 affidavits alleging county prejudice against council members. Alderman McCauley seeks a similar move. Also noted are canal boat cable plan approvals and an insurance fraud arrest of Charles Robinson over a $3,500 loss.
A Chicago & St. Louis freight train three miles from Bloomington derailed after hitting a cast iron switch-chair placed on the line. Seven or eight stock cars left the track, engine damaged, track torn up. No lives lost. A $500 reward offered for the saboteur's capture.
Covington notes include a firm with 150 almanacs and a diligent clerk who has read them all. A Short Line train from Louisville ran off between Eagle and Campbellsburg, delaying service but causing no injuries. Delegates to the Ohio River Improvement Convention are named. A sewing machine theft case proceeds to grand jury with $300 bail. A U S marshal reports a defaulter captain held in Louisville. Mrs. Murray is found dead at her Ninth street home. A meeting at Arbeiter Hall plans toll reductions for the Covington Cincinnati bridge and Main street ferry.
Captain John Williamson sold a mule to Newport and Dayton Street Rail road Company, which returned the stubborn animal after payment, now the subject of a Circuit Court case to be heard today. Ash Wednesday services and a large masquerade ball season mark the day along with new incorporation filings in Cincinnati.
The House debated irrigation and drainage measures for Butler and Hamilton counties, and a bill to make the Lu cas county Lunatic Asylum a branch of the Northern system. Other bills covered railroad receiver suits, canal access for Canadians, and civil procedure costs in writing. The Schiff redistricting bill faced sharp opposition and a final vote approved a version granting a plotting commission authority with conditions and amendments.
Transfers of real estate dated February 13 record numerous Lot and acre trades with prices from 1 to 19 thousand dollars including Orchard street and Auburn avenue properties. A lawsuit against Commercial Insurance Company of Chicago alleges insolvency after a $2,000,000 fire loss and claims stockholders are buying claims at low rates to par for notes, while assets collapse and land proceeds are diverted from debt payment.
A fierce Monday storm in Low A. Siorux City brings snow driven by hurricane winds, collapsing telegraph lines and freezing temperatures. Samuel Edison dies after freezing during a return trip from the city. several other deaths are reported as mails remain snowbound for days.
A northbound Chicago and Northwestern passenger train collided with a southbound freight near Evansville yesterday afternoon. Both engines were smashed and several cars wrecked. The express messenger was badly injured but not seriously. The conductor failed to wait for the freight as ordered. The same day a legislative committee reported on bribery charges tied to Chippewa dells improvements, with a majority finding no misconduct and a minority urging a continued inquiry.
New York at 1 30 P M closes and Gov bonds with 1865s 1867s steady. Sterling firm at 1097 and gold loan at 1 percent. Liverpool reports cotton steadier with 10 000 bales traded of which 400 speculative. Upland and Orleans futures listed with varied prices and receipts noted.
The Cathedral in Louisville hosted the wedding of P Nash Madigan and Miss Tilla E Laval yesterday afternoon. The bridal party arrived early and were accommodated at the Burnet House with Mr Charles Laval, brother of the bride, joining the party on their travels.
