Americans Smash Ahead Ten Miles In Verdun Sector

Allied dispatches describe a major American drive along the St Mihiel salient opening with ten mile advances and 9 500 German prisoners. French and British forces supported the push as German lines collapse, villages fall, and a widening battle front develops toward Metz.

Tanks In Battle At St Mihiel Drive

More than a hundred tanks took part in the first American drive against the St Mihiel salient. Tanks and troops moved under a smoke screen while American and French gunners pounded German artillery along a ridge. A detachment of 45 tanks lost only one vehicle in heavy mud as they swept away enemy machine gun nests and kept the advance going. Rain and sticky mud hindered progress as Franco American bombardment roared for miles.
