Brest Deaths From Influenza and Coffin Shortage

A Navy Chaplain's letter from Brest France describes war graves and burial logistics amid influenza. He recalls 2000 soldiers dying there, most after being brought ashore from transports, and notes shortages of coffins and lumber. Bodies were laid to rest in a Brest district field, with 250 Black workers digging graves. Coffins were scarce, and yet reverent funerals were held as Catholics and Protestants prayed side by side.
