Women Killed Crossing Train Near Windsor Station

Two Hartford women, Mary Shelto and Frances Magaldo, were killed crossing the tracks at Wilson Station depot when an express train clipped them at about 2 50 yesterday. They were carrying bushels of lima beans to the market garden on the east side. the train did not stop after the mangled bodies were dragged about 150 feet.

Food prices rise sharply in past year and five years

Washington reports retail food costs up 15 percent in the past year and 69 percent over five years. Beef and hens lead yearly gains at 36 percent each, with meals up 123 percent and staples like flour 103 percent. Overall average food cost up 3 percent in the last month.

Seizure of Wheat Bound for Germany by Alien Property Custodian

New York August 20 seizure by the alien property custodian A Mitchel Palmer of 1,057,000 pounds of wheat glue intended to go to Germany via Switzerland. The grain valued in pre war times at about $200, was found in June in a Newark warehouse ready for overseas shipment. It will be sold at public auction on August 26.
