Middlesex Coroner Finds Faults in 1918 Railroad Crash
Coroner Stephen B Davis of Middlesex County reports findings on the Old Saybrook railroad wreck of August 7 1918 that killed W Davis and Louis P Greene. He notes the first freight train moved slowly on a siding near Westbrook while the second train approached, rain and hail reducing visibility. The engineer of the first train faced potential censure for siding speed. the second engineer assumed the siding was clear. Davis suggests the cause remains uncertain and emphasizes the need for clear advance warnings when a track is occupied. The report concludes with remarks from Davis and is dated Middletown August 17 1918.
