French forces retook the strategic village of Locre from enemy control in a brilliant assault. The operation, part of a larger ground campaign, shifted frontline momentum and showcased coordinated artillery and infantry breakthrough. Local casualties were reported on both sides with no immediate confirmation of counts.
British and French forces repelled German drives along the Flanders front, recapturing Locre and pushing back advances near Villers-Bretonneux. Allied lines held firm as heavy shelling and fierce fighting continued across Ypres and Picardy sectors. Locre’s recapture and renewed pressure southwest of Ypres marked a notable Allied success on the forty-first day of the German offensive.
In France on April 29 Lt Joy describes how he aimed at and killed the German sniper nicknamed Black Fritz after watching his pit for hours. He recalls the chase, the boyish look of a German recruit, and how the kill ended a weeks long threat along the American front. Joy notes that sniping became a grim duty and the war’s pace quickened.
Hartford April 30 florists are limited to not more than 50 percent of their former fuel use by an order of United States Fuel Administrator Thomas W. Russell. The nationwide restriction aims to reserve fuel for munition production and runs the coal year from April 1, 1918 to April 1, 1919.
A Budapest dispatch to the Muenchener Neueste Nachrichten reports that Wekerle’s bid for a coalition based on a compromise with Count Tisza has collapsed. Count Belazrenyi is now discussed as successor to former Premier von Seydler.
In Huntington West Virginia on April 30 doctors operated on Samuel Davis to remove a half dollar swallowed after it became lodged in his stomach. The coin had been in his mouth when he accidentally swallowed it and remained undigested for two days.
Copenhagen reports the White Guard seized Viborg on the southern coast of Finland. Six thousand Red Guard troops attacked toward Frederikshamn and were repelled with most of them killed or fled. Viborg, once a Russian naval base guarding the Gulf of Finland near Petrograd, is now held by German allied forces.
London reports the British labor mission has returned from the United States. Delegate C. Duncan says there are no peace talks in America and that towns are eager for war. He notes admiration for British fighters and observes laborers in shipyards riding in their own cars.
The forecast for New Haven and vicinity calls for generally fair weather with a cooler feel tonight and Wednesday. Across Connecticut, fair and cooler conditions with moderate west winds, as a disturbance moving from Wisconsin toward the St. Lawrence valley weakens.
