Poison May Control Worst Pest of American Cotton
An entomologist team from the U S Department of Agriculture reports progress in poisoning the boll weevil. Field tests near Tallulah and in Arkansas Mississippi and Louisiana show reduced square puncturing and increased cotton yields from poisoned plots. Lead arsenate and calcium arsenate mixtures tested with dew driven application suggest profitable control, with costs around one dollar per acre per application and potential large-scale efficiency gains.
