Disease kills more than guns says Hoover in a National Dairy League address. Hoover warns starvation and disease in Europe surpass wartime casualties, urging full mobilization for war effort and defense through food administration actions.
Cleveland May 24 Katherine Steiison arrives from Chicago to New York in an airship after a five hour and twenty eight minute flight covering about sixty one miles per hour. Airship passage marks mail delivery achievement.
May 23. Moscow reports heavy combat near Kiev with all Rada forces mobilized. The residence of the Ukrainian leader Skoro Padsky is besieged repeatedly as troops converge. Also noted is the death of Mrs Emily Rickett, sister of the late Charles Stewart Parnell, whose work in the house created a sensation.
Washington May 2 A proposal to amend selective service regulations compels men in deferred categories to work in essential occupations. Registrants may be assigned new jobs or sent to the Army if refusing such work. Waiters bartenders ushers domestics clerks and hotel attendants would be affected with dependants ignored.
Washington May 23 The Attorney General announced that slacker draft dodgers who flee abroad to avoid conscription will be prosecuted under the Selective Service Act as part of President’s plan to grant unlimited authority over the Army.
Mr and Mrs Taylor and daughter Miss Taylor, longtime residents east of the hospital, left last night for Colorado with plans to likely return to their Indianapolis home in early fall. Miss Helen Taylor, a graduate of this year’s class, was talented in vocal and instrumental music and will be missed by many friends.
