The Third Liberty Loan is over-subscribed by 6.888 million dollars per the Treasury report. The total is expected to exceed three billion dollars, far above the minimum. The report also notes Austrian Parliament’s near dissolution and ongoing military actions on the Western Front including bombardments and local British advances.
British military officials report quarter of a million men killed wounded captured or missing on the western front since the March German offensive. Vienna notes heavy action along the Italian front from the Adriatic to the Quidicarie Valley with fierce fighting and a predicted Austro German offensive as part of a broader plan.
Twenty six trains of wounded soldiers are said to be returning to Germany from Picardy and Flanders, reported by Les Nouvelles of The Hague. The trains were counted April 9 between 11:00 and noon along the Namur Liege line as Germans crowded coal cars to transport the injured. President Wilson approved the revocation of death sentences for four U S soldiers in France. Privates Allen Leydoeyen and Stanley G Fishback had their sentences commuted to three years confinement while Privates Forest O Sebastian and Jess Cook received full pardons. In Washington the leasing bill faced fuel allocation concerns as Secretary Lane predicted shortages after sixty days.
Rain fell heavily in Albuquerque overnight and into the morning, delaying daily plans. Paris reports spirited artillery fighting along the Avre River southeast of Amiens, with official confirmation of engagements on the front.
Rufus Madera and his son Fred arrived in town to deliver 245 cattle sold earlier for delivery May 4. The stock was loaded below town and will be shipped today to buyer Wetherbee of Kansas City. Madera cites scarce grass and calls for rain as relief. a heavy rain near Lovington yesterday loosened dry conditions but more rain is needed.
