German forces renewed a violent assault on the Verdun front west of Dead Man Hill last night. Picked German troops attacked a stretch of one to three miles but were nearly annihilated by French fire.
Senate leaders engrossed by prohibition features of food legislation as debate continues on the food control bill. Predictions say prohibition efforts will be confined to distilled liquors after the president urged leaders to drop the push against beer and wine production.
The armored cruiser Kleber struck a mine off Point Nat hew and sank. Three officers and thirty five sailors aboard from Dakar were lost while en route to Brest. The cruiser was fifteen years old, cost 3 650 000 dollars, and had a complement of five hundred.
James J. Callahan of the Pittsburg Nationals has been relieved and Hans Wagener appointed temporary manager amid team dissatisfaction and a poor showing. The AP report from Pittsburg notes Wagener takes over as the Pirates work to halt their slump.
