Passengers arriving at an Atlantic port report a German submarine was attacked and apparently sunk by a British steamship off the American coast last Sunday. An American officer who witnessed a single shot declared the hit likely clean, but AP could not confirm the report.
Allied gunfire mowed down waves of German attackers in mass assaults. French forces retook positions as the ground filled with dead enemy troops. German strength was estimated at 20 to 30 divisions through last night. the AP reports 130 names on today’s casualty list.
Paris reports that the German drive between Mont Didier and Isoyon pressed on, while French forces regained Mory and stabilized the line south of Helley at St. Maur and near Marquessive and Vandelicourt. On the right, heavy enemy concentration forced a temporary withdrawal toward Ribecourt.
The Central committee of the Cadet party in Russia asked the United States to send expeditionary forces into Russia to aid in repelling German invaders. The appeal was transmitted to the state department via the Russian embassy in Washington on June 11.
German forces drive south from Noyon toward Mont Didier with gains in several sectors. French counterattacks on the left imply a possible breakthrough as the Aronde river line becomes the focal point. French units retake Mery and push enemy back south of Rellon near the St Maur river.
