Newport May Day Festival drew strong crowds and boosted the Newport Hospital Benefit fund. About 150 dined at the Methodist and Congregational churches and 250 attended the evening pageant at School Hall directed by Mrs. St Coloy. Harry Hamilton led publicity and Mrs. Augusta Young oversaw overall planning with Mrs. Frank Sherman managing the meals served at three meals. Breakfast started at five and ran to nine, filling the Assembly Hall. Continues on page five.

Newport pupils strike for higher teacher pay
In Newport on May 4 the entire public grade and high school system went on an indefinite vacation after a demand for a $300 pay rise for teachers was denied. The 2,963 pupils marched from the building, chanting more pay for the teachers as they paraded the streets.

Principal J A Davis announced at chapel that he resigns as principal to become supervising prefect at Girard College Philadelphia. His resignation takes effect at the end of the current school year and he will move in fall. Girard College occupies 10 acres in the heart of the city with a plant valued at 6 million dollars and 1400 students enrolled this year. Davis will earn about 5000 dollars yearly managing the recreation and supervision of students.

Two thirds of California precincts counted in the Republican presidential primary show Hiram W. Johnson leading Herbert Hoover by 288795 to 158583. Hoover carried three of 54 counties. Bumper Crops Push Down Chicago Food Prices
U S Bureau of Food and Markets reports prices easing in Chicago as bumper crops of onions and cabbages arrive. Texas Bermuda onions fell by 50 cents a bushel, nearly 500 carloads en route. Navy to Move Destroyers for Possible Mexican Duty
