Newport High School defeated St Johnsbury Academy 20 to 11 in a rough basketball game at School Hall Newport. Newport second team beat Derby Academy Hive 10 to 9. Evangelistic services led by Rev Walter Carroll drew large crowds at Methodist and First Baptist churches with several decisions signed.

Farmer Shoots Self After Suitors Rejected Widow
March 22 Hoyt Gallup aged 60 or 63 shot and killed Mr HN Fenwick as he tried to return to his Plainfield home, then killed himself. Gallup had kept company with Mrs Fenwick and hoped to marry her, leaving four children. Mrs Fenwick’s son found them after a supper gathering. Gallup’s horse was sweating at his home, and he died by a pistol shot in the kitchen. A separate item notes Prof Charles E Emiek, an economist, died suddenly, and Germany’s defense ministry calls conditions there extremely serious with Berlin described as bad.

Death of I G Marshall at Brightlock Hospital
Isveal G. Marshall died at Brightlock Hospital after an operation ten days earlier. Born June 5, 1857 in St Johns New Brunswick, he lived in several towns including Berlin N H and Springfield where he held factory and dye room posts before becoming city missionary in St Johnsbury in 1915. He is survived by his wife Sarah Clinch and six children, with funeral to be held at Union Baptist church Tuesday afternoon.

Washington March 22 Rear Admiral William S Benson then chief of naval operations told Rear Admiral Sims not to let the British pull the wool over your eyes we would as soon fight them as the Germans Sims testified before the Senate Committee investigating naval operations of the war He said the remark followed his final instructions from Secretary Daniels before departing for England on the eve of U S entry into the war The remark was made in the office of Rear Admiral A Palmer and repeated the next day and six months later in London Sims said he paid special attention because he believed Benson was anti British He called Benson an upstanding honest man and noted Benson's strong convictions He added his confidence helped him win the post he held during the war The testimony also notes resistance to Sims selection by some officers and a break in at a shop safes by ech-opener method.
