Col Emery speaks in Newport during a Bennington trip claiming a clear early lead across northern counties. He denies plans for punitive actions against opponents and reiterates commitment to speeches amid a cautious campaign trail.
In St Johnsbury five youths aged 14 to 18 were found guilty of taking and operating automobiles without owner consent after trips to the Covney car from the U S Fish Hatchery and a Plymouth Dream run. Each of five was fined 60 with 1000 dollars in probation. The sixth boy, 16, was given a lesser sentence to contribute to the fines and placed on probation. Names not printed due to age.
June 25 Londonderry reports a night of disorder with a large armed crowd. A destroyer searchlight targeted the city to locate fighters. a former soldier was killed crossing a street. Normalcy returns, banks and shops reopen, food is short, gas remains absent, and sniping declines as a conciliation committee forms to end the trouble.
The committee of jurists meeting in The Hague has unanimously ruled that the permanent court of International Justice should be located in The Hague, as provided for in the League of Nations covenant.
Twenty four crew men at Coatsville joined the trainmen's strike today. It is stated the twelve mills there will be seriously affected if the strike continues. Ports from Pennsylvania show little change nightly as some men return and others quit. Leaders are voting on joining the shopmen. many will be out by tomorrow, according to party chiefs.
June 29 past convent ceremonies showed no decisive headway as the national committee met to draft a roll of delegates. Only one contest from Georgia filed. Reed of Missouri remained the sole non-routine challenger. A movement to shelve the prohibition issue surfaced, with support from factions across the spectrum, including Cummins.
George Clough of Barnet Vermont died at midnight from a gunshot wound incurred while attempting to kill a vicious dog that attacked him. He returned home after sundown, retrieved the dog, and as he aimed to strike the animal the pistol discharged, lodging a wound in his intestines. A passing keeper found him and doctors were summoned but he died. He was 28 and unmarried. the dog was killed by the shot.
Local unrest erupts with an arson attack on a shop owned by a prominent Bein Fein supporter and several other incidents. A group later set fire to a merchant’s shop, with extensive property damage. American Legion plans community festivities and a political rally is noted, while a large fireworks display is scheduled at the fairgrounds.
A Morrisville case details Levi P. Bashaw shooting his wife at his Bashaw Quick Lunch Room, then killing himself. Mrs Bashaw, shot through the mouth, is hospitalized and expected to live. The assailant, 50, is a restaurant proprietor and was reportedly jealous. The couple’s troubled marriage included a divorce and prior separations. the incident occurred about 11 o clock Thursday morning. The body of Bashaw lies in Morrisville morgue as authorities note no inquest.
Large hailstones up to 18 inches in circumference smashed two farm buildings at Hillsdale five miles from here. Cars were trapped as motorists sought shelter under their toppled roofs. damage extended to local farms and vehicles.
Chicago June 25 officials from all recognized railway unions met to pressure President Wilson and the railway board to end the yearlong delay after unions presented demands. Lee of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen blamed the president for slow action, warning of potential paralysis of train service if delays continued. Also notes Hitchcock declined vice presidency, and Wilson urged Southern legislatures to act on the Federal suffrage amendment with North Carolina and Tennessee sessions highlighted.
