Newport High School girls fall 18 to 40 to St Johnsbury Academy in a lively double header at School Hall. Local boys beat Richford 30 to 18 in the second half as over 200 spectators praised the spirited affair.
Boston January report says Governor Coolidge ordered removal of jitney buses from Salem streets as they were deemed illegal. The move followed a conference with city authorities and street railroad officials. Streetcar service resumed at the State House announcement, with officials noting jitneys had disrupted public transit.
Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt completed a round trip to Brazil for her health. Archie Roosevelt accompanied her to Rio Janeiro but stayed in Brazil for the Coffee House venture in which the Roosevelt family is involved.
A heavy snowstorm overnight overwhelmed the city as the street cleaning department failed to recruit enough workers. Only 1 500 emergency laborers joined 3 000 regular city men, far short of the 6 000 needed. Officials lament the shortage and note past difficulties in securing labor. Also, a Navy inquiry into morality allegations at the Portsmouth yard was ordered by Assistant Secretary of the Navy.
Boston reports the heaviest snowfall of the season at four inches causing widespread delays in transportation. The morning temperature swung from a 16 degree rise to an 8 degree fall within eight hours, and forecasters predicted more snow tonight.
A local effort seeks to create a Girls Community Club with a Women’s Christian Association leader to provide supervised dances, outdoor recreation, and a welcoming social center for working girls regardless of creed or social position. An initial budget of 1500 dollars is planned, with support from women’s groups and employers, plus small annual fees from the girls and sustaining memberships. Funds are being gathered from Scarelight Club, Miss Round Table, Rector’s Aid, Suffrage Club, College Club, Woman’s Relief Corps, Outlook Club, and individuals including a Philadelphia donor offering 50 dollars annually. The committee, led by Mrs. H. W. Blodgett, hopes to form the club in early spring.

Jan 17. An explosion leveled part of a building at Newton Tea and Spice Co in the river front district, killing five firefighters and injuring many. The fire destroyed the site beside the suspension bridge over the Ohio River with losses pegged at $100,000.
Rutland VI Jan 17 A fire destroyed the Valley hotel and four stores at Middletown Springs causing an estimated fifty thousand dollar loss. Local fire crews battled the blaze but could not save the structure.
Rear Admiral Sims told a Senate naval awards committee he was ordered to England in 1918 with a warning not to let the British pull wool over your eyes. He charged lack of cooperation from headquarters in London and said action for aid to the Allies came only after ten months. He read a letter to Secretary Daniels outlining naval lessons of the Great War. He said grave errors were made in handling the navy department.
County Court at Celedonia adjourned Saturday noon, awaiting Monday two o'clock. Defense presented evidence from lumbermen arguing policy phrase steam power timbering mill referred only to sawmills, not veneer mills, and showed Crawford Ranney agency records where the term insured sawmills. Trial continuation planned for Monday afternoon as defense resumes.
