Rev Milton S Rees preached on gaining the victory at the South church St Johnsbury during the evangelistic service Wednesday night. A large congregation joined in the uplifting message as the choir directed by Mrs Rees delivered splendid singing.
The text argues that a town’s success depends on organized life including schools churches and societies and that such groups thrive only with public interest and a live newspaper to support and publicize their work. The Caledonian is referenced as continuing on page four.
The Bigelow Norris Bobbin mill on Clyde street burned completely early Wednesday evening in Newport. The building became a roaring mass of flames before the fire department arrived, hampering efforts to save the structure. Continued on page five.
Town officials in St Johnsbury prepare for a non partisan caucus Saturday at two o'clock to nominate officers for the March town meeting. Incumbents A. F P. Lawrence and J. G. Marshall seek re election while Charles N Whitney and Charles W Farr enter the race for selectman and overseer of the poor respectively. Other races include school director with Dr W G Rieker seeking reelection and Mrs Walter P Smith considered for the post. Walter S Russell has announced candidacy for overseer of the poor, with plans to move to the town farm. Chief Finley disavows candidacy for any office and Frank N Carr is noted for his familiarity with town needs. Graves and the remaining offices round out the slate. The caucus is organized by both town party chairs despite its non partisan nature.
President Wilson will hold a private conference tomorrow with three representatives of railroad brotherhoods to discuss wage demands of about two million railway workers. Secretary Tumulty said invitation specifics would be left to Director General Hines. A White House meeting on the South Lawn is planned, with Hines preparing the negotiation terms for the President to decide. Meanwhile, J N Malloy and a committee of ten will meet Hines to discuss grievances prompting a strike call, and W G Lee of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen seeks to discuss the invalidation of their agreement. Navy news notes Commander Thomas Mott Osborne resigns as head of the naval rescue force at Portsmouth Naval Prison.
Peb 12 The American destroyer Talbot was reported in distress near Serpent's Island in the Black Sea. It is believed the report may refer to the Talbot’s position as the British cruiser Ceres tows two tugs with refugees from Oressa toward Constanza.
In Montpelier on February 12 the sentencing of former Governor Horace F. Graham for larceny in misusing state funds was postponed as the defense pursues an appeal to the Supreme Court. The defense argues Graham invoked his right to decline sentencing, and a reversal could lead to a new trial, potentially affecting juror impartiality if sentencing occurred. No Supreme Court argument is expected before next fall. Meanwhile in St John, New Brunswick, over 1100 freight cars remain icebound after last week's storm, hindering rail operations as crews work to free them.
Townsfolk feared Hecht or Pow would lose power as coal ran scarce at Twin State Gas and Electric Works. Manager Gage arranged three carloads from Boston and a New Hampshire shipment, easing the critical period and signaling a rapid return to normal service.
President Wilson selected John Barton Payne of Illinois to succeed Franklin K. Lane as Secretary of the Interior. Payne currently chairs the U. S. Shipping Board and will assume the post in Washington.
