A 1908 Santa Fe public instruction letter urges strict enforcement of the poll tax on all able bodied men over twenty one. It outlines duties for county clerks and school boards, notes past undercollection, and calls for immediate action to fund public schools.
W Doty, who had suffered weeks with dropsy of the lower limbs but was not bedbound, died in the O K saloon yesterday morning. Transport to Santa Fe hospital failed to satisfy him, he returned to Estancia and lived alone with possible Kentucky relatives. A fund was raised for his burial in the small cemetery southwest of town.
A 1908 county meeting notes bonds voted for 15000 dollars to fund a courthouse and jail, with 10000 for construction and 5000 for other expenses. Prospective buyers offered par value but none purchased yet, while penitentiary bills threaten action and credit risk looms if arrangements fail.
Antonio Salazar, assessor of Torrance County, fell faint at his Betancia home on Monday morning. He was found later by his wife and revived by a physician. He was en route to Mass when illness struck and is now recovering.
James Walker this week closed a sale of his homestead northwest of town to I N Shirley of Oklahoma. The Walker place features a premier ranch house near town with other improvements, and the final price of 4000 dollars is described as very reasonable.
The stork visits the Dibert home south of town delivering an eight and a half pound boy on Wednesday morning. Mother and child are healthy. Ammon Dibert is out of danger after his first town visit. Grandpa Dibert is elated by the arrival.
J W Records of Cimarron reports from Miles City Montauk that an estate left by his wife’s father Benjamin L Lampton includes a ranch and house, cattle and stock, and a substantial bank balance. Records plans to return early April as he manages the estate and sets affairs in order.
Rev. R P Pape, a tall Baptist minister from Ruidoso, helped fight the Southwestern Hotel fire on Saturday night. He dodged a bucket attack, urged prayer and water discipline, and kept up a relentless stream as the blaze raged, insisting salvation comes through service and faith while the building burned.
Rain in the valley shifted to snow by morning last Saturday with light amounts in the valley and several inches in the western foothills. Officials note the moisture will aid crops this summer but warn more precipitation is needed.
The Torrance County Teachers Association plans its final meeting of 1907-08 at the Estancia Baptist Church on April 4 1908 with Territorial Superintendent J E Clark expected to address the gathering Education leaders urge all teachers and education advocates to attend for discussion of school issues. The program covers sanitation decoration school funding through property taxes, lessons on teaching tables arithmetic and reading and a True Teacher essay with current events and methods of teaching.
An election will be held in Estancia on Monday April 6 for selecting one director to a two year term and one director to a three year term. Voters will also decide on issuing bonds to finance a new school building. By order of the Board of Directors.
Francis Marion Williamson born March 2 1846 in Boon County Indiana died March 9 1908 of heart failure. He joined the Union Army in August 1861 serving in the 43d Indiana until the war’s end. He lived in Kansas from 1882 including Anthony and Caldwell before moving to McIntosh New Mexico where he died. Funeral and burial at Oklahoma Hill cemetery with sister Mrs Jas A Lynn noted.
Judge Mann at Santa Rosa to hear cause April 6 as timber from Tajique Land Grant is blocked from disposal. Commissioners Manuel Sanchez y Sanchez Bonafacio Barela Vibrio Anaya Candido Sanchez and Jose Anastacio Maldonado cited after timber sold to J H English & Company for sawmill use. Amador Otero Romulo Chaves and others spearhead bid to keep grant timber intact.
Mountainair Lodge No 32 of the Knights of Pythias was instituted last Thursday night March 19 by Deputy Grand Chancellor John H. Crum of Albuquerque. Mrs Clayton of half way in Willard underwent a difficult operation Tuesday for a long standing complication. The appendix was abnormally large and removed. Doctors Mason Haze and Sunderland were the surgeons. The patient is resting as well as could be expected under the circumstances.
The Garnett Public Library in Estancia New Mexico lists new additions dated March 21 1908 with donors named. The assortment includes Encyclopaedia Britannica 26 volumes Chamber's Encyclopedia eight volumes Life of William McKinley works by M Halatead M Everett and others.
