A Wednesday thunder shower with light hail freshened the valley, aiding crops though not soaking ground deeply. Reports say north of town rain was heavier, Estancia saw dust settled and roads wet, while east of McIntosh the soil stayed moist to about an inch. June may see more showers.
Friends throughout the Estancia Valley recall Frank Dibert who died at Johnstown Pennsylvania on June 8 after months in Hot Springs Arkansas seeking health. His life spanned leadership in Santa Fe Central construction planning and promoting grape culture and seed distribution. He aided Methodist Church development and attracted capital and expertise to the valley, leaving a lasting partnership with local farmers and boosters.
The Childrens Day exercises at the Baptist Church last Sunday night passed off pleasantly. The church was tastefully decorated with flowers and ferns. The house was crowded and extra seats were brought from the M. E. Church, yet some stood. Rev Summers recalled his appointment so all might attend. The children performed well with no one singled out for special mention.
Mountainair New Mexico June 8 1910 Estancia News presents a description of Thompson School District Number 39 created June 7 1910. The survey outlines a tract beginning at the northeast corner of section 12 township 5 north range 71 east thence five miles south to section 36 thence west 3.5 miles to the half section line section 33 thence north five miles to the north side of section 9 and thence east 3.5 miles to the starting point. A reflective look at the poultry craze titled chicken fever and the futility of persuading cranks to quit. The writer recalls his own start in poultry in New Mexico and notes local challenges such as dry springs, cold winters, gapes, scaly legs, and hawk damage while predicting improvement as the hobby grows. Mrs. Garnett and Miss Kate Parkell are due from Carthage, Missouri around June 30, and Jim Carlisle is touring town shooting views.
Washington D C June 16 The senate passed the enabling act for New Mexico and Arizona, removing the final obstacle to statehood. The bill, reported by the territories committee, assures two new stars for the flag. Tribune Citizen reports the development.
The Newsman toured Tuttle's Pumping Plant and the new Courthouse. The irrigation pump runs at about 100 gallons per minute, drawing water from an 181 foot well with a 25 foot downpipe and a 5 HP engine, irrigation eight acres of potatoes. The courthouse roofing and interior work progress, with Cartwright Gothic metal roofing and plans for two large vaults, jury rooms, and a courtroom. Altogether the project boosts Istancia and Torrance County pride.
County Assessor Howell announces Torrance County's total assessed value for the year will reach about 1.3 million dollars, up roughly 12 percent from last year and about 26 percent from 198. The assessor and county board advocate harmony, with every raise approved, promising more equitable assessments and a reduced tax rate.
A few months ago the examination was taken and failure noted in certain branches. Those permitted to write on those subjects are not required to write on all subjects.
The Territorial Common School Examination is conducted today and tomorrow at the Estancia school building under Superintendent C R Burt and Professor T M Russell. Pupils who seek certification will sit through the two day assessment.
The West Side Maroons, with players from Blaney Silverton and New Home districts, ordered new uniforms this week. Willard merchants own High Point nine, now called Willard, beat Estancia 4 to 3 at the Hub City last Sunday. Clovis defeated Albuquerque 6 to 2, leading the Santa Fe pennant, while Albuquerque dropped three straight to Roswell and Clovis.
At the residence of the bride's parents five miles south of Estancia, Henry Tefft of Austin Minnesota wed Helen Knight in an Episcopal ring ceremony performed by Rev. J. R. Carver. About 25 guests attended, bringing a fine assortment of gifts. best wishes from the News and friends follow the couple.
Edna B. Hurd and Dr. Charles E. Ewing were married Wednesday at 7:45 PM at the bride’s sister Mrs. Monte Goodin’s home. Rev. B. F. Summers officiated in the presence of close relatives and friends. The couple soon moved to their new home and hosted a lively reception for Estancian guests.
Rev Amzia Martin Steele and Miss Lucy Ella Gowen wed Wednesday in Ong Nebraska. Steele serves as Methodist pastor now at Ong after transferring from Estancia last fall. Bride is daughter of Mr and Mrs G R Gowen of Ong. News wishes the couple long and happy life.
B W Means Jr son of Rev Means from Mt Calgary was in town with a Manzano native over a mule dispute. The native demanded they go to Estancia to settle, armed with a .45 Colt. Means had the native arrested for impersonating an officer and was then arrested for theft of a suit of clothes. The case is a tangled affair likely to resolve with little consequence.
Last Saturday Mr Merrifield of the North Silverton neighborhood sustained a severe shoulder bruise when his team of horses frightened and bolted. The rig overturned after the pole broke and the horses damaged a fence. Mr Merrifield is recovering at this time.
Department of the Interior notice from Santa Fe New Mexico dated June 12 1910 states the plats of survey for several townships have been filed and will open to entry on August 5 1910. Townships listed include T 4N R 8E NM P M T 7N R 10E NM P M fractional T 7N R 7N M P M and fractions in townships 8N ranges 7 8 9 and 10 E Y 1 P M subdivided north of Antonio Sandoval grant. Rejected. Manuel R. Otero Register.
Department of the Interior notes that the strip north of McIntosh and the area around TANRSE TNRWET 7NRZE are filed in the Santa Fe land office and will open to entry after standard advertising. J W March says the exact filing date will be announced in the columns soon for Minnie Brumback and local residents.
Improvement work at Park A includes cleaning and walling the upper spring, connecting the water pipe to railroad shops, and a redesigned lower spring with a brick ring, inverted funnel, and standpipe with a screen. A spout feeds a deep receptacle and drainage ditch, replacing stagnant water with faith and cinders, moving toward beautification.
A dance is set for Saturday night June 25 at the Traver building to aid the Estancia baseball team. Proceeds will fund the players as they strive to uphold the town’s diamond name with good music supper and a good time promised for all attendees.
