Snow fell across the Estancia Valley last Friday and into Saturday, leaving about six inches by Sunday. Moisture soaks into the ground improving soil conditions and farmer prospects for a good year. The covering hindered jackrabbit movement, leading to thousands slaughtered by hunters. estimates run from twenty to forty per hunter, totaling several thousand.
The Modern Woodmen of America plans to organize in Estancia before Christmas as New Mexico gains jurisdiction. Duty C E Michael is here to facilitate the effort, targeting a large initial charter membership from Albuquerque and Santa Fe members in the valley.
J D Tinsley of the New Mexico Agricultural College says the summer drought reduced crops but taught dry farmers the need for scientific farming. He notes population shifts and contrasts between Estancia valley practiced science and failed crops, predicting stable settlers will remain as the territory strengthens through improved methods. Methodist Church notes invite all to Sunday services by Rev. A M Steele with morning and evening worship. The Ladies Aid held a Wednesday afternoon meeting and welcomed six new members as interest grows. Epworth League hosted a Saturday social at Mr and Mrs Green with good turnout despite bad weather.
W C Barnes former Territorial Cattle Sanitary Board member now with the Department of Grazing of the National Para, visited the Estancia Valley reporting rapid growth. He notes shacks replaced by respectable dwellings, extensive feed stacks, and crops signaling agricultural progress. He seeks a meeting with Earl Moulton to discuss further proofs.
The Ladies Aid Society will host a box supper and entertainment next Thursday evening December 1 at the church. Attendees are invited and asked to bring well filled boxes to be judged for a prize. Proceeds go toward paying down the pew debt.
In a letter to the News T. J. Tarleton of Venus Texas says he expects to be back in the valley on his New Year claim. He left a year ago hoping for success but found his mistake and will stay this time.
C H Bagley presents a detailed, critical account of the Estancia Valley Exhibit at the Albuquerque Exposition and Fair. He blames space limits and mismanagement for losses of major premiums, lists disputed payments, and describes delays in premium payouts and pamphlet distribution problems. He notes staff conduct, transportation issues, and appeals for fair handling of awards and expenses.
