County Jail Construction Begins in Estancia

Torrance County commissioners awarded the contract for a brick jail at Estancia to Bush & Stanford after the successful bid. The jail and its two-level brick walls will be fourteen and a half feet high with a metal ceiling and shingle roof. Work has started and will be rushed to completion. Previously prisoners were sent to other counties or kept in private homes. A wooden frame used as a temporary jail was built by Estancia residents but was destroyed by fire.

Estancia Seeks Fire Protection With Pipe Line Plan

Business leaders and citizens met to discuss fire safety expansion in Estancia. They consider connecting a water line to Santa Fe Central right of way, piping from springs to various locations, to ensure unlimited water and pressure, with a night watchman funded by volunteers. Arthur Milby purchases the Moriarty general store from L. A. Bond and will take charge around September. Milby, a Moriarty resident of over five years, has built Hughes Mercantile Company into a substantial business and is regarded as a careful, shrewd, and trusted dealer.

Bond Store to Move as Local Business Remodels

Changes in the business district include the removal of the Bond store across the street around September or October. Mr. Bond will remodel the building into a warehouse and relocate stock of general merchandise under one roof. A new drug store will occupy the former Bond space, opened by Dr. E. G. Boyd Dr. R. A. Johnson and Jra Duensing.

A farewell was tendered to the party of eastern people staying several weeks at Antelope Ranch. On Friday night August 21 at HE Ludwick home neighbors and families shared a jolly evening with refreshments. Attending were Dr and Mrs Bonauland and family of Pittsburgh PA Dr and Mrs Stanton of Cincinnati OH Mrs Hoyer of Pittsburgh and Mr and Mrs Kelley Adams Miller and Ludwick.

Tuttler Family Reports Several Stricken by Fever

Several members of the Tuttler family are confined at home with fever, prompting concern about illness in the household. Local health officials have advised rest and monitoring for worsening symptoms.

Estancia water project contracts signed and drilling ordered

Mr Mayo has contracted to sink a test artesian water well for Estancia Public Service Co. at Estancia, with drilling to 2000 feet or deeper if needed. Angus McGillivary to host the well on his property for five hundred dollars and cover drilling costs if water, oil, or gas flow. Subscriptions urged at Estancia Savings Bank to avoid delay as derrick and gear are prepared.

Farmers Showing Samples in Valley Competition

Farmers in Chavez and surrounding areas compare crops as to the best yields. James Wood sent in roasting ears almost twelve inches long, Ridge Whitlock presented a fourteen inch ear grown by O H Scott, and R C Whitlock showed millet four feet six inches tall with twenty eight stalks per plant. H S Cobb reported a large saa tee weighed twenty three ounces. Crops statewide are thriving, with field corn maturing and heavy forage crops despite drought, promising a banner harvest.

Mountainair Chautauqua draws large crowds

The first Mountainair Chautauqua finished to strong attendance and broad applause. Speakers from Prof J E Clark to Dr H M Perkins drew praise, and music by a noted local chorus surprised critics. The assembly is to be permanent and annual, signaling strong local interest in such programs. Mc Cochran and Bilsing repair a steam plow outfit in Willard for prairie breaking, promising solid results.

Romero Planing Mill Work Begins on South Fifth Street

Work started this week on the Romero Planing Mill building on South Fifth Street opposite the Romero Lumber Yards. The project had been under consideration for months before the contract was let. Miss Lillie McGhee is ill with typhoid fever at her home north of the city.

Mountainair Wedding Brings Local Notables Together

Mountainair hosts a society wedding on the night of the 26th at the bride’s sister home. Miss Bertot Cicero Indiana wed Mr Burt, a Mountainair teacher and lumber company member, with Rev W A Pratt officiating and a Methodist ring ceremony. Guests included families from Cicero, Willard, Los Angeles, and local residents.

Resignation of Estancia Schools Director M B Atkinson

M B Atkinson, four years on the Estancia Schools board, has submitted his resignation to County Superintendent Jaramillo due to family illness. Patrons regret his departure as he diligently oversaw school work and helped the district recover from a weak financial condition through persistent effort.

Fire makes clean sweep in Estancia blaze

The Estancia fire on Saturday morning started from a gasoline stove explosion in a bakery at 5:20. It spread rapidly, destroying the bank building and most of the block south of it while rescuers saved others with bucket brigades. Several businesses were wiped out but have since moved to temporary quarters and insurance coverage exists for most. reconstruction plans are under consideration.
