Fourteen Drown As Steamer Sinks Off Whitefish Point

At Whitefish Point Michigan a fog bound collision between steamers Isaac M. Scott and John B. Cowle on Lake Superior left Cowle at the bottom in 50 fathoms with 14 crew killed. Scott returned to Sault Ste. Marie with part of Cowle’s crew, while others clung to the deck or jumped into the lake and were rescued.

Storm along Mississippi flood lands and wind havoc

A cyclonic wind struck St Louis and suburbia at noon. Wires were blown down, trees uprooted, and several people injured. The heaviest storm hit Alton where an excursion steamer was buffeted and forced to seek a landing across the river. Ten thousand acres flooded and 160 families fled as levee towns faced surging waves.

Chinese Pretender Killed as Troops Halt Insurgent Advance

From Pekin dated July 13 a youth pretender to the Dragon throne and over 2000 followers were crushed by viceroy forces in Yunnan province. The 12 year old claimant was captured and executed after his army was routed near Yunnan Fu. The Chu family was slain and the youth displayed in a cage to deter challengers to authority in Manchu rule.

Rioting in Bolivia floods La Paz and attacks legations

Rioters filled La Paz, Bolivia tearing through streets. Electric wires cut, widespread pillaging, and shots fired. Foreign nationals, notably Peruvians and Argentines, faced danger as Peruvian and Argentine legations lacked guard protection. A prominent meeting in Buenos Aires and Lima reports added tension as Bolivia protested.
