Balloons Parties Escape Destructive Storm Above 10 000 Feet
John Berry winner of the Indianapolis distance cup and M A Heimann rode the balloon Melba into a 60 mile gale and thunderstorm. The bag split and the balloon acted like a parachute before they landed safely. Berry recalled the black cloud and freezing, near death experience.

Five Men Scalded On Hull Torpedo Boat Near Alcatraz
Five sailors on torpedo boat Hull were badly burned when a boiler tube failed off Alcatraz. Fireman B P King was severely injured, others including J M Roberts Francis Crawford John R Carter Newton Carish suffered serious burns but are expected to survive as the vessel headed to Sausalito for repairs. Steam filled the boiler room as a second tube burst and King reached the deck with help from crew.
