Tax reform urged as state faces high levies and old burdens
The author analyzes the Tax Commission’s plan showing public schools and higher learning receive about 47 percent of the appropriation, with penal and charitable institutions and health taking another 30 percent and 18 percent for courts, debt, and other needs. He argues taxes must be lowered and a painless extraction method could fund state needs, urging calm, informed debate and a political push in next year’s elections to shape tax reform while preserving essential services.
