Court to convene Monday for two weeks at general sessions

The Court of general sessions will convene Monday May 22 with Judge J W DeVore presiding. It is expected to run two weeks as many cases await trial including seven murder prosecutions and several assault cases. A resentence to electrocution for Kirby Gappins and Fox is anticipated.

Veterans of '65 attend Darlington reunion this week

Messrs Jas E Rawl Marion D Harman and G M Harman, veterans of '65, are in Darlington this week for the annual Confederate Veterans reunion and state convention. They plan to return home later in the week.

Declamation and Expression Contests Set for Friday Night

Two contests will be held Friday at 8:30 PM in the school auditorium. One for boys and one for girls in the high school department. Boys speakers include Odelle Harmon Lever Caughman Joseve Hallonan Daniel Shull Charl Harman John Roberts Willie Harmon. Girls speakers include Katherine Whitten Amy Franklin Mary Wallace Edith Roof. A prize will be awarded to the best speech in each contest. The public is invited.

Minstrel Show Draws Large Lexington Post Crowd

A Legion minstrel program presented by the Lexington post of the American Legion drew a largely attended audience Wednesday night and the receipts were satisfactory. The Batesbury appearance scheduled for Friday night was postponed due to unavoidable circumstances.

Flood Damages Bristol Va Tenn Center as Beech Creek Rises

Flood from Beech Creek in Bristol and adjacent areas caused about 600000 dollars in damage. Thirty-five stores flooded and many homes evacuated as water filled basements and streets. Postoffice, department stores, hotels, and State Street shops suffered, with merchants moving merchandise to upper floors and sandbag barricades used to stem flood waters. A Big Ady About Bertie staged by tenth graders

The tenth grade will present A Big Ady About Bertie on Thursday and Friday nights May 26 and 27. The Ladies' School Improvement league sponsors the show to raise funds for school improvements. Admission is 25 cents for children and 50 cents for adults, with tickets on sale at all drug stores this Friday.

Officials of the state treasurer's office said yesterday that out of five thousand checks received on the new state tax program, officials report strong revenue flow and steady public compliance.

Tax receipts push near four hundred thousand in year

Tax collector notes about 1,500 to 2,000 checks remain to be counted, pushing totals above 400,000. Estimated yearly tax near 700,000 with many taxpayers yet to pay and many half payments. Governor Cooper to resign by Saturday noon

The State reports Governor Cooper intends to resign at noon on Saturday after agreeing with Lieutenant Governor Harvey on a plan for the transition. Leaphart Confirmed as U S Marshal for South Carolina

Samuel J. Leaphart was Wednesday advised of his confirmation to be United States marshal for the Eastern District of South Carolina. The senate had approved his nomination along with J. D. Meyer of Charleston to be district attorney. Leaphart will assume duties in a few days with headquarters in Charleston and will likely spend much time at his Lexington home.

Poincare Takes Emphatic Stand at Genoa Talks

On May 12 the French premier renewed orders to Barthou at Genoa. He forbade any negotiation with Russia and urged an early end to the conference. France refused to have French and Russian experts sit on the same commissions, preferring allied expert meetings possibly in another city with U.S. representatives also present. Belgium, Poland, and other nations observed the stance.
