Cotton Association to wage illiteracy fight in South Carolina
The executive committee of the South Carolina Division of the American Cotton Association voted to mobilize the organization in a campaign to have every person ages 14 to 100 learn to read and write within the year. G. L. Toole introduced the resolution, backed by T. L. Manning and others, noting South Carolina ranked 46th in education. The plan calls on county officers and branches to lead drives with state authorities to reduce illiteracy. The meeting was attended by President Mixson and delegates from Orangeburg, St. Matthews, Aiken, Lugoff, Dillon, Sumter, and Columbia.
