Growing Sweet Potatoes at Clemson College

A Clemson extension note outlines sweet potato farming in South Carolina. It covers soil types, rotation, soil preparation, fertilizers, bed formation, planting dates May 1 to July 15, and vine spacing. Leading varieties include Nancy Hall Porto Rico and Triumph, with cultivation and fertilization steps to maximize yield and profit. A 1918 four acre case shows costs and returns, including land rental, plowing, bedding, manure, fertilizer, planting, harvesting, curing, storage, and depot transport.

Poisoning the Boll Weevil Across The Deep South

A Whittle Sell Improvement Committee reports that boll weevil poisoning covered over 160000 acres of cotton in Mississippi Louisiana Arkansas and Texas during 1919. Savings of 500 to 1000 pounds of seed cotton per acre were reported at a cost of 6 to 10 dollars per acre. Poisoning should begin when 10 to 15 percent of squares are punctured and be repeated about every four days, with three sprayings usually sufficient. Calcium arsenate dust is applied at 5 to 7 pounds per acre using suitable machines, preferably when dew is on. Proper materials, timing, weather considerations, and machines are essential for effective control and safety.
