A 12 ounce nine inch peach brought to the Record office drew attention. It was not the largest on the tree but was among the most perfect. Nurses and nurserymen visited the Thompson home to collect grafting slips and Sam promised more trees in return for the cuttings.
About 500 people gathered at the Rock Island depot in Fairbury to welcome four hundred legionaries traveling from New York City to the National Legion convention in Los Angeles. After greetings, the Fairbury group wheeled out a truck of Nebraska watermelons loaded into the baggage car for the visitors.
The Diller Volunteer Fire Department met Wednesday evening and voted to sponsor public entertainments for the fall and winter to replace free movies and concerts. The first event will be a 5 cent dance at the city hall next Saturday night.
Tom Harr and his daughter from Alton Illinois spent last Saturday visiting former neighbors in Diller. They called on Mrs Mollie Riddle Mrs Ina Hill Mrs Ida Woods and the Will Ames and Lawrence Madden families. Tom is the son of the late John Harr, longtime local resident.
Mrs Eleanor Filley Andrews returned to her Steele City home Sunday following an appendix operation at Odell hospital. She had stayed with her daughter during recovery and by Monday was readjusting to normal home life with family reporting gradual improvement.
Roy Schulitis earned first place in a State Fair auctioneer contest held last Thursday with fifteen contestants. The event, judged on imaginary sales, was sponsored by KFAB.
Mr and Mrs Chas Waggoner came back after a ten day vacation in the Rockies. Chas reports a pleasant overnight visit at the Will Cherry home near Valentine Nebraska.
A concise eye care notice urges annual eye exams and trusts the reader to Dr. Neil C Morrison of Fairbury Nebraska. It notes the office is air conditioned for patient comfort.
The six year old son of Mr and Mrs Fred Maschmeier recovers from a serious bout of gastro enteritis and is reported out of danger at this time.
A traveling steeplejack painted the steel flag pole atop the town hall from top to bottom with a luminous coating during a short visit this week.
Miss Geraldine Wiemers daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Wiemers left early this week for Hastings to enter a new work at Hastings College.
Mrs Henry Novotny has returned to her Odell home after a successful appendix operation at the hospital.
The Jefferson County Agricultural Farm Bureau sponsors a three day Agricultural and Livestock Exposition at the county fair grounds east of Fairbury from September 22 to 24. Local citizens and the Fairbury Chamber of Commerce promote the event with exhibits, amusements, and talent. The Friday September 23 School Day parade is expected to draw all county schools.
Thursday events include the Plymouth Band and Wehling Duo with adagio tap dancing and contortion. Rotary Club milking contest and Kiwanis skits feature Betty Jean Brinson and Bob Garrett alongside a dark secret. University of Nebraska choir and V of F W drum corps perform with a pyrotechnic display by American Legion firing squad.
A schedule lists races and performances including a free 4 mile horse race, 3 mile wagon and cow pony events, a 1 mile master singers segment, and pony races for under and over 12 hands. Betty Jean Briveun performs with the Diller Band and Wehling Duo at 8 P M.
Friday program at Fairbury features George Hatch and the Boy Soprano Quartet at 7 30 pm along with a county women Betty Jean Brinson milking contest finals of the F W Drum and Bugle Display and the American Legion Firing Squad event.
Garrels will compete in the ladies milking contest next week at the county fair. The fair management provides cows and buckets. Prizes go to the highest milk weight in two minutes, with contests also among the counties.

The list shows names and ages for many Diller students from 1 to 8, including Anderson, Allen, Baker, Ball, Fox, Garrels, Green, Moore, Nicholson, Thompson, Roelf, and others with ages ranging from 1 to 8.
The annual Methodist conference in Omaha announced preacher appointments known to Diller folk. Names include Velte, Hinson Hastings 6 years, Brough Tecumseh 1, Huntington Fairbury 5, Proett Juniata Ke n esaw, Pengelley Polk Sweed Pigins 4, Maxey Inman 3, Kendall Hanscom Park 4, and Drew University pastor.
A four by twelve inch shaft marketed as red granite at the Record office is actually pressed sawdust from western lumber mills. Sold for $7.60 per ton as stove and fuel, the by-product was brought from Scotia, California by Harry Abrends' family who visited Ervin and Dorris Beckwith Fanders. Dorris uses this fuel in her household operations.
Vester Carmichael reported on his five acre millet patch this week. At the first cutting he removed 20 large loads and the second growth now stands 36 inches high. He estimates eight more loads of feed will be harvested. Hadley may weigh in next.
Wm Behrends is reported on the convalescent list, indicating he is recovering from illness or injury. The item notes his status within the roster of local or organizational members requiring care.
Announcement states new renewal loans of 57 cents per bushel for corn produced in 1938 will be available to commercial area farmers who planted no more than 102 percent of their 1938 corn acreage allotment. Loans run until November 1 and mature August 1. Farmers meeting ACP 1987 criteria may get the new 57 cent loan on their 1937 corn even if not previously loaned at the old rate.
Jefferson county wheat producers ask when coverage begins. E A Jacobs explains that insurance starts once the premium is paid and the crop is seeded, with a policy effective from planting to harvest covering hazards beyond the producer’s control.
Jefferson county farmers are invited to the annual Rooters Day swine farm meeting at the Nebraska College of Agriculture this Friday October 7. Prof. Wm. J. Loeffel leads the program which remains incomplete. Experimental hog feeding work will be reviewed and some lots shown.
Mrs Ed McCune has been battling influenza since yesterday and is much improved today after overcoming illness and treatment.
The Jefferson County Farm Bureau sponsors a Friday farm tour with topics on diversified livestock, sorghums, and grain production. Highlights include visits to Diller Harbine Jansen areas, talks by UNL expert H J Gramlich on sorghums, and demonstrations of hybrid corn and weed control methods.
The Diller Woman's club holds its first meeting September 21, 1938 at 8 p m in the Congregational church. It is an open reception for teachers ministers and new members with public invited. Ralph Brooks superintendent of Wymore schools will entertain.
