Government involvement in private business attacked by a federation
The Shannon committee heard protests from manufacturers and businessmen in South Bend and Chicago over government enterprises and paymaster bureaus. The Federation of American Business argued that bureaucracy harms trade and cited Uncle Sam in diverse firms, from delicatessen to department stores, as evidence of government competition with private enterprise. Railways opposed the Inland Waterways barge line, while Porter Leach and Bruce Dwinell presented letters and arguments. Committee members included Shannon, Pellengill, and Rich.
