Salvage director Dr. Fanders says a definite date is pending as plans unfold for the third scrap metal drive. County and local scrap chairs urge residents to gather old metal for farm tools and military production to boost 1944 output and preserve war supplies. more details to follow next week.

Fire Destroys Thober Farm Home Near Ellis

A fire of undetermined origin destroyed the Clyde Thober farm home located two and a half miles southeast of Ellis Saturday night just before midnight. Neighbors could not save the furnishings as the home and contents burned completely. The Thobers, who rebuilt the house about a year ago, were in Beatrice at the Passion play when the fire occurred. Estimated loss is $4,000 to $5,000, partly insured.

Mrs R V Hall and her husband arrived in Atlanta from Diller by car and train amid a long letter recounting a strenuous journey. The note details a crowded Atlanta Depot, family arrivals in Akron, Ada’s hospital visit, and the sorrowful death of Ada as relatives gathered.

Deer Seen on Highway 4 West of Daykin Said To Be Near Daykin

The sighting near Daykin involved two deer on Highway 4 about five miles west of Daykin, one large and one small. A driver, Rudolph Zajicek, halted as the pair turned south into Al Rosener’s pasture, sparking speculation on their origin. Registration details for Ration Book No 4 held at Diller Schoolhouse on October 20 with sessions 1-5 and 7-10, plus a separate September 25 alternate, coordinated by advanced commercial staff and faculty. Vocal and instrumental registrations underway, band and beginner groups planned, with 75 students signing up for vocal activities.
