Tobacco experiment in Nebraska promising as Hastings leaf shown

A labor bulletin notes a fine quality tobacco leaf grown near Hastings and Central City. Crops acreage fell due to a wet spring, but pasturage and hay outputs rose. Barley and corn areas shrank while alfalfa increased. The tobacco leaf, tested by a Lincoln manufacturer, appears marketable for plug, smoking tobacco, binders, or cigar wrappers, with potential yield of 300 to 400 pounds per acre.

University Regents Meet Plans for State Institutions

The University of Nebraska regents met to discuss welfare of the university. An appropriation of 590,000 was approved to finish the engineering building and 41,000 for equipment of the new veterinary building. A private telephone system for campus lines was tabled due to unsettled intercompany issues. Dean Burnett reported on agricultural department progress and state farm improvements costing 129,060 with notable equipment upgrades.

Provost Bound Over After Federal Hearing

Provost was bound over to appear before the next federal grand jury after a September 23 hearing before U S Commissioner Singh. Eight or nine witnesses testified and Homer Morris, 18, pleaded guilty and implicated Provost in the robbery. Provost denies meeting Morris for a week before the crime, though witnesses placed them together at 11 p m on the robbery night.

Glese Manufacturing Company to Locate in Grand Island

The last share of the $10,000 preferred stock was subscribed Friday securing the Glese Manufacturing Company. The foundry and windmill maker will locate at Grand Island before year end with equipment valued at $15,000. It has a seven percent cumulative dividend and a five year option to take all stock at $105 a share. The Commercial club favored the proposition, marking Grand Island’s second major industry this year.

Charles Miller Bound Over on Assault Charge

The preliminary hearing for Charles Miller of Wymore, arrested Tuesday for assaulting Thomas Martin of Hanover, Kas., resulted in Miller being bound over to district court in $300. Evidence showed blood on Miller and Martin in the lodging house room, though Miller claimed a nosebleed caused it. Martin suffers head wounds but is not in critical condition.

Indians Seek Damages Across Five Courts

Assistant United States Attorney A W Lane filed five suits in Thurston county district court seeking 2500 against George F Phillips and William L Johnson for the Omaha tribe and members. Young Man Ends Life Near Amherst in Tragic Suicide

George Wilcox, 2¢, a young man with a wife and three children, shot himself above the left eye with a 2 calibre rifle at his father-in-law Fred Wick’s home four miles south of Amherst on Friday at 4 30 PM. He was reportedly ill with consumption at the time.

Beatrice Player Injured During Practice Tackle

Richard Kretsinger, youngest son of Mr and Mrs E O Kretsinger, suffered a broken shoulder while practicing with the Beatrice high school football team. He was tackled in drills, thrown to the ground and struck a rock.

Inferno at Mulberry Street Tenement Kills Eleven in NY

A deliberate arson fire at 71 Mulberry Street in New York wrecked a tenement early Monday. Eleven people died, more than a dozen were injured, and about thirty escaped by the narrowest margin as three oil-soaked barrels blazed in the lower hall. Among the dead are Minechillo Furiiolo and his wife Antoinella with three children, Francisco Polestrino, Mrs. Rose Schettino and Christina, Vita Bargone, Pietro Magliacci, and an unidentified man.

Wider Gloves Smuggling Ring Branded by New York Officers

New York customs officers disrupted a large glove smuggling scheme aimed at evading duties. Several arrests have been made and about $5,000 worth of goods seized, mostly Italians involved, with departures from the Mediterranean and seizures in New York City and Brooklyn. Authorities say a clear connection suggests a broad conspiracy in gloves.

Women Fail To Enter Names On City Voter List

Fourteen suffragists visited registration booths to have their names placed on the city voting list but registry clerks refused to record them. The effort was led by Wesis, president of the New York group.
