When Oscar DePriest was elected to Congress in 1898 anger ran high among Southern Democrats. They defeated him in the subsequent election but could not erase his color. His rival, Arthur W. Mitchell, who won as a Democrat, is also a Black man.

Mr and Mrs Charles Gaisford of Reynolds came to look after things at the Carmichael home during the absence of their parents. Mr and Mrs Michael were to see taking Mrs Gaisford back to their home.
