Bank Closes in Fairbury as State Examiner Steps In
The Farmers and Merchants National Bank of Fairbury was closed by the state examiner on Saturday. The institution, organized 11 years ago, has $60,000 in capital stock, $10,000 surplus, and $230,000 deposits including $80,000 from county state and school treasurers protected by a surety bond. The balance $150,000 must be raised to pay depositors in full. President Dr H L Clarke and cashier A R Nichols assure depositors will be paid in full with stockholders as the only losers. The failure is blamed on excessive frozen paper. Fairbury still has two strong banks with $100,000 capitals and deposits over a million each. Depositors largely faced no panic and shifted accounts to other banks.
