Mystery in Death Case Shoots Fremont Man

Mrs Peter Miller widow of a former Fremont butcher received a telegram announcing the death of her husband at Clarks Ned Information from Union Pacific railroad sources says Miller was found dying beside a railroad track with his head crushed as if struck by a blunt instrument It is believed he met foul play The family moved from Fremont to Grand Island seven months ago and had just returned to Fremont Miller remained behind to drive a team of horses he planned to sell on the way It is presumed he sold the horses and was killed and robbed for his money

Argo plant to move machinery to new Illinois town

Argo Starch plant equipment from Nebraska City will be moved to a newly laid out town named Argo in Marshall county Illinois. The Corn Products company funds a 65 million dollar expansion including plant and town layout similar to Bessemer Steel. The entire machinery and plant will be relocated for use in the new facility.

Jealousy Suspected in Omaha Woman Shooting

William Jobson, a Pacific fireman from Council Bluffs, shot Mrs Lizkit Burns of 108 North Fifty Fifth Avenue Omaha and slightly wounded her brother James Donnelly. Burns, formerly employed by Jobson’s mother, had been living with her brother. Burns was shot twice with the first bullet entering her chest.

Gun Sample Arrives For Nebraska National Guard

A sample of a tew army magazine gun has reached the adjutant general. Delivery of one for the Nebraska national guard is delayed though rifles are expected soon. The gun resembles the air but is six inches shorter with wood encasing the top and bottom of the barrel.

A large and enthusiastic gathering of Brown County residents filled the Ain Siem ts courthouse area for a campaign meeting about local schools. Citizens voiced support for educational improvements and debated policies.

Body Identified as Carl Kirschner in 1967 North Platte Drowning

Telegram from H Kirschner states the body found in the North Platte River at Guernsey Wyoming is Carl Kirschner son of H Kirschner. He drowned June 24 1967 when a boat capsized while Kirschner and Deffer and others tried to photograph in swift current. Deffer was recovered. Kirschner died. Both were students at the state university.

Sets with painful accident at Cairo creamery

Charlies Stoltenberg was injured while helping load ice at the Cairo creamery. He rested his hand on a rope near a pulley in the ice house and, not hearing the driver, had fingers caught between rope and pulley, two fingers severed at the first joint.

Fire destroys Ayr grain elevator and oats load

A grain elevator of about 18 000 bushels capacity in Ayr, owned by J H Pope of Hastings, burned to the ground. The structure, leased to Reader and Son, contained a car load of oats and some wheat. Loss is estimated around 5000 dollars. Cause undetermined but suspected to have started in a room with a vasoline engine.

Opticians Elect Officers At Lincoln Meeting

The Nebraska State Optical Society met in Lincoln and elected officers for the coming year. Fritz Hoefer of Auros was chosen president with F. A. Hannis of York as first vice president and Preston of Oxford as second vice president. John Holts of Omaha became treasurer and J. H. Hukill of Lincoln secretary. A move toward a permanent circulating library for opticians was approved along with formation of standing committees.

Railroads to Observe Nine Hour Law March Four

Union Pacific Northwestern and Burlington railroads announce they will observe the nine hour law starting March four. About 200 additional telegraphers will be employed on lines west of the Missouri river with train service curtailed where possible, especially on branches and some main lines.

Canning Factory at Peru Plans 200 Acres of Tomatoes

The H. W. Lowe canning factory of Peru has closed contracts for 200 acres of tomatoes for the coming season. Mr. Lowe is arranging to can tomatoes pumpkins fruits and berries of all kinds and is preparing an exhibit for the display.

Harlem Street Car Barn Fire Destroys 740 Cars and Paint Plant

Two massive fires in New York City overnight leveled the Harlem car barns of the New York City Railway Co on Second Avenue and a nearby paint factory run by Grote & Co on 102nd Street. The car barns covering First to Second avenues and 96th to 87th streets burned from midnight to dawn, destroying 740 surface cars and causing an estimated $2.5 million in losses. the paint factory suffered about $125,000 in damage. Families near the barns were evacuated as crews battled the blaze with water.

Nine-Hour Law Sparks Faster Railroad Telephone Use

The nine hour law for telegraph operators, effective March 4, accelerates telephone use on trains. A B Ingalls, Lake Shore superintendent, says the change could yield in one year what ten years of phones would. Tests since October show success with Lake Shore, Ohio lines, and New York Central in Albany to Fonda. Chicago, Burlington & Quincy now runs all trains by telephone between Chicago and Galesburg.

American battleship fleet sails from Callao on lengthy voyage

The US battleship squadron under Rear Admiral Evans weighed anchor at Callao on February 29 for a long voyage. Spectators were ferried out to see the departure, and the fleet was reviewed by President Pardo. The next stop is Magdalena Bay around March 14, with 3012 nautical miles to travel to Magdalena Bay. Target practice at Magdalena Bay may take about thirty days, delaying departure to San Francisco.
