Sub Sinks Jap Ship Kills Pfc Joe Hiatt
Pfe Joe C. Hiatt of Beatrice Nebraska died when an American submarine sank the Japanese ship carrying him from the Philippines to Japan. A POW since Corregidor he was a coast artilleryman. One of 1775 prisoners aboard only five escaped death. Red Cross notified his parents October 24 1944. Our sympathy is extended to the Hiatt family.

Obituary of Joseph Colonel Hiatt
Joseph Colonel Hiatt, born June 23, 1916 near Diller, son of Mr. and Mrs. J M Hiatt, joined the Methodist church in Odell. Aware of athletics, he farmed near Diller, later worked in Watkins Iowa, and volunteered for military service in 1940. Inducted December 11, he trained at Angel Island, served in the Philippines, endured Pearl Harbor layover, and became a coast artilleryman then diesel engine mechanic. Captured at Corregidor May 6, 1942 as a prisoner of war, he moved through camps No 4 7 10-C, last card Jan 20, 1945. He died aboard a Japanese troop ship Oct 24, 1944 after departing Luzon. His brother Robert Lee U S R perished Jan 7, 1945 off Luzon. He is survived by his parents, sister Ethel, brother William, sisters Dorothy Wygmore and Molly Titman, plus extended relatives.

Ray Larkins Wounded in Okinawa Up In Wheel Chair
A Marine Corps notice dated June 8 1945 informs Clarence and Ray Larkins that Private First Class Ray Larkins USMCR was wounded in action on May 2 1945 at Okinawa. A later letter says he can sit in a wheelchair and write with his right hand for the first time since injury. He suffered a broken ankle right arm shoulder and back and is hospitalized in Hawaii with plans to be brought to the mainland soon.

Mrs Sophie Koch Passes at 68 in Lanham
Mrs Sophie Koch 68 died at her Lanham home Friday. Her husband died five years ago. Survived by three sons Ed and Herman of Beatrice and Alvert of Diller and six grandchildren. Short house service at 2 p.m. Tuesday followed by Lanham church service at 2:30 with Rev Walker officiating. Burial in Lanham cemetery.
